In this course, you will learn about Indonesia's maritime policy and the sustainable management of the oceans, including how international maritime law, political measures, conservation programs, and security strategies contribute to the governance and protection of marine areas. Responsible ocean management is essential for the environment, the economy, and social stability.
The course covers, among other topics, Indonesia's unique geographical and political characteristics as an archipelagic state, the challenges posed by illegal fishing, marine pollution, and climate change, as well as the importance of marine protected areas, the sustainable ocean economy ("Blue Economy"), and international cooperation.
So ist Dein Kurs aufgebaut
The course is divided into two consecutive learning units that explore Indonesia’s role as a maritime nation, the challenges of ocean governance, and sustainable strategies for protecting the oceans.
The first learning unit consists of a lecture that introduces the theoretical foundations of the topic. In the second learning unit, you will deepen your understanding through a Q&A session with the speaker, where you will explore practical examples of how these concepts are implemented in Indonesia. Step by step, you will expand your knowledge and develop a deeper understanding of global ocean sustainability challenges through real-world examples from Indonesia.
Both learning units follow a similar structure:
- Knowledge Acquisition and In-Depth Learning: Gain insights into Indonesia’s maritime policy, international law of the sea, threats to marine environments, and approaches to sustainable ocean use and marine conservation.
- Reflection Activities: Reflect on the broader connections between sustainable ocean protection, economic interests, and international cooperation.
At the end of the course, you will complete a final reflection activity that brings together the key concepts from both learning units and encourages you to apply them to broader questions and future challenges.

This is an online self-paced course in which you work through the content and activities at your own pace. Throughout the course, knowledge acquisition and active engagement alternate: your learning progress is regularly assessed through short activities, while formats such as forums, reflection exercises, and discussions encourage you to apply and deepen your knowledge.
As with your other university courses, you will need to dedicate a certain amount of time to this course. However, the required time may vary depending on your previous knowledge, individual learning pace, and level of engagement with additional research and exploration.
